What is Favor? There are several definitions but I am going to choose this one, “an act of gracious kindness.” You could also say that favor is being blessed (receive an act of gracious kindness) even when we don’t deserve it.

So, you could say that we are all favored (the recipients of gracious kindness) because we have all done things that weren’t the best but [sometimes in the same day] received an act of gracious kindness.

I propose to you that the degree in which we recognize and appreciate the favor that we receive actually entitles you to more favor. If you are a parent, mentor, big brother/sister, or anyone in authority over someone else, when you do an act of gracious kindness to someone and they appreciate, recognize and thank you for it, does it not motivate you to do even more?

So to say that favor isn’t fair, I say is true, because who can actually say on their own merits/efforts/work they deserved to be favored (receive an act of gracious kindness).
So, I charge you, the next time you receive an act of favor (an act of gracious kindness) be thankful and watch more favor enter into your life.

This year I set a big hairy audacious goal for myself. I want to be a blessing to more people. Every new year I focus on myself and things I want to do to make myself better, put myself in a better position. However, this year, I am thankful that I am thinking outside of my own situation.

I see people around me that are in need and their need is motivating me to grow and do things even better. I know a person who donates her time, baby sits for her friends, volunteers in the community, and gets around at 6am any of day of the week. She does all of this without complaining and always in a cheerful spirit. I wondered “how does she get around with no car?”

I know of a single mother who has to make a choice between feeding her children and paying the rent. She earns too much to get assistance from the government but not enough to avoid this predicament. It is a choice, I believe, that no one should ever have to make.

Some may say, Calvin, “who are you to help these people and are you rich to do so?” I would answer them, “what my finances can not do, my faith and favor will.” So, I set 3 public #2010Goals:

1. Buy this young lady a car
2. Pay rent one month for an individual in need
3. Pay mortgage one month for an individual in need.

How am I going to do this? Honestly, I am not sure, I have my bills and obligations that I have to meet, but I am going to sacrifice, save, and pray that opportunities, automobiles and my network can help to achieve this goal. Now, I saw an opportunity to win $25,000 from CarMax so I entered in the drawing.

Now, am I putting all of my hopes on that CarMax awards me the prize, No. I am putting all of my hopes in God and his ability to bring it to pass. But, just in case someone at CarMax reads this, I would want them to know that my desire to enter and win this prize is not so I can pocket all the money for myself; instead, to give away more than half of it by buying someone in need a car, paying one month rent and mortgage for someone in need.

This maybe foolish or silly to some but I think I am just continuing to have faith, that I will achieve the goals that I have set out and be able to bless those who I see are in need.

I am sure I am not the only one to do my #2010 Goals and I am actually glad I hadn’t. I learned something today that is huge (I am going to wait to share it though and it would had drastically affected my #2010 Goals.

So, if you are looking to make goals for this year and need some place to start, I hope that this list will help you. Now, you can do goals for every sub area or just the major areas, either way it is up to you and I hope this helps.

Major Areas of Your Life:

Personal

Family

Professional

Community

Personal Sub Areas:

Spiritual

Financial

Health & Fitness

Education & Mental Development

Social Life & Relationship

Activities

Family Sub Areas:

Spouse

Home Life

Children

Parents

Extended Family

Community Sub Areas:

Local Community

National Community

International Community

What Do I Suggest? I suggest that you first look at these areas and start with the answer to this question, “What do I want to have accomplished in these areas [major or sub] when I die?” Then work backwards until you are at #2010.

*Hint* Please ensure you have someone that you can be accountable with so they will come back and check with you in 3 months to see if you have made any progress.

C.

————————————————-

GENERAL INFORMATION, INSTRUCTIONS AND REMINDER ITEMS

Background Information: Tuskegee Airmen, Incorporated is a unique organization dedicated to the preservation of the history of African American Veterans whose service during World War II demonstrated to America that the criteria for responsible citizenship are character and achievement rather than ethnic origin. Although incorporated in Washington, D.C., the organization consists of many chapters, a National Museum at the Coleman Young International Airport Detroit, MI and the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation, located in Los Angeles, CA.

Each year the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation grants scholarship awards to deserving young men and women. Each year the number of available scholarship awards is directly related to income received from investments. Forty (40) awards of one thousand five hundred dollars ($1,500.00) will be available in 2010. The $1,500.00 awards are for one year only. One (1) twenty thousand dollar ($20,000.00) Pratt & Whitney award will be presented to a scholar who can demonstrate a sincere aptitude for and pursuit of a career in aviation, aerospace technology or research. This four-year Award will be paid in increments of $5,000 per year. The student must maintain a two-point-five (2.5) grade point average (GPA) and continue in the selected career path.

Eligibility Requirements: Applicants must be students of accredited high schools who have graduated or will graduate in the school year 2009-2010. Additionally, applying students must have a GPA of at least three points (3.0) on a four-point scale.

Application Procedure: Application forms and instructions may be obtained from high school guidance counselors, Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation website (www.taisf.org) , the Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. website (www.tuskegeeairmen .org) or a Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. Chapter. Completed applications must be returned to the specific address indicated on page 1 of this application or to the Indianapolis Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen Inc, P.O. Box 88325, Indianapolis, IN 46208 on or before February 1, 2010:

Each applicant must submit a two (2) page essay containing: a biographical sketch, educational aspirations, career goals and an explanation of why financial aid is essential.

Additionally, the applicant must include a single page essay entitled “The Tuskegee Airmen” which reflects an overview of their history. Essays must be typed, double-spaced with 1-inch margins on 8.5″ x 11″ paper. Please note, all attachments to application must not exceed 8.5″ x 11″ in size.

To validate the financial status of the applicant, a copy of parent(s)’ latest IRS Form 1040 (preferably 2009) through adjusted gross income line must be included in application package. If not required to file Form 1040, provide official alternate source document to verify income, such as statement from Public Social Services, Pensions or SSI.

Selection Procedure: Applications for scholarship assistance received by individual chapters of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. are screened, verified as deemed appropriate, and competitively evaluated. Application files determined worthy of further consideration are forwarded to the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Selection Committee for National Competition. A scholarship selection committee, composed of several members from each Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. Region, evaluates individual applications. Using a scale of one hundred (100) points, the committee considers academic achievement, extra curricular and community activities, relative financial need, recommendations, and both essays to competitively rank applicants.

Notification Procedure: Finalists (selectees and non-selectees) will receive individual notices of final results from the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation Board of Directors.

Award Payment Certification: Scholarship awardees may enroll in the institution of their choice. Upon completion of enrollment, the school registrar must send verification of enrollment and curriculum to the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation. When the required verifications have been received, individual award payments, made payable to the student or parent, will be mailed by Wells Fargo Bank, Los Angeles.
